Developing new ADNUG website

David Maczkowiack commented at last ADNUG meeting

Here is a list of the features suggested as well as comments in regards to some of the features that Paul wants to implement in the new website (With comments on Pauls test site in green and my suggestions in blue).

  • Announcements on the front page (either in the body of the page or inside of the left menu or both, e.g. important announcements in the body with more commercial announcements on the left. I just checked Pauls test website and this feature is already there). Announcements do not have to be necessarily ADNUG related and could be industry related in general.
  • Disscussion boards to discuss meetings recently held (these could be part of a forum or better still appended to the bottom of the page in the same style as the discussion boards that allow readers to reply to articles on news.com.au or articles on most blogs)
  • Forums – some like the idea, some dont, those that dont beleive ADNUG does not have enough members to support a forum. ( A discussion board/slash forum is already incorporated into the test site. Perhaps we could fnd a way to feed stanski’s existing mailing list into the ADNUG site or scrape ozdotnet’s website if lack of participation or content is a problem?)
  • Blog integration, many members already have their own blogs, members would like to see their existing blogs fed into the new adnug site (Paul has made sure the test site already has links to some members blogs. Sharepoint may have a blogging feature that will allow members who dont yet have a blog to publish their own on the adnug site, if we could give each blog its own subdomain this would nice, e.g. www.peter.griffth.adnug.com or www.freakonomics.blog.adnug.com ).
  • Video recordings of past meetings stored on the website, youtube is the cheapest option if storage space is not available for this on the website, another member has suggested bittorrent so we can distribute better quality video than youtubes (Rapidshare or similar file sharing site would be the best option but will cost 55 euro’s. If all of our video’s are avalable online ADNUG may be able to attract interstate and overseas members.)
  • The opportunity for some of our members to offer services to other members as long as this does not conflict with existing advertising by ADNUG sponsors perhaps members could buy temporary sponsorship to sell their service on this site for a month or two?
  • Paul has added a Jobs discussion board where members can employ or be employed by other members
  • Paul has also added book reviews to the site.
  • Paul has already added links to presentation
  • Paul has made sure that there is a link to a repository where ADNUG and its members can store and share files with each other.
  • Paul has included an Events Calendar
  • Paul has a signup button on the front page which takes potential members to a signup page (If we move the membership database online we may be able to easily integrate ecommerce using the paypal kit)
  • Paul has a link to the photo albums on the front page
  • Paul has included a sign in link at the top of the page
  • Paul has also included a search bar

Disk space is not a problem, I could also setup streaming video if required.

If your interested, I could give you some basic SEO advice to try and improve the websites performance with search engines.

I’m not sure how flexible Sharepoint is with optimising though.

1st tip. Don’t give a page the title “Home”!
