Defence Industry in SA
The 2 major industries in SA are Defence and Mining.
Alan Yates from SME-Gateway spoke briefly at last meeting on the many opportunities for SMEs/SMBs in Defence Contracts.work. But this is difficult because of contract performance requirements of these departments which make it extremely difficult to achieve this.
SME-Gateway provide a structure to allow SMEs/SMBs to get into defence work.
SME-Gateway bid for Defence contracts and use SMEs/SMBs under contract to perform the work.
Go to http://www.smegateway.com.au , click on To Join, complete the application form and send to Alan Yates to arrange an interview.
To see the current RFT that DSTO have issued for which SME-Gateway are seeking SMEs/SMBs for this SA based contract, see my earlier post ”Department of Defence RFT- Information technology consultation services.”

At the January ADNUG, I spoke of the 2 major industries now in Adelaide. Mining and Defence.DSTO and other defence departments are keen to get SMEs and SMBs working in defence. Needless to say it is very difficult for this to occur considering the stringent conditions in defence contracts. However SME-Gateway provide a means for this to happen. Alan Yates from SME-Gateway spoke briefly at the meeting about the panel contract for consultation services for DSTO. You can get into defence contracts through SME-Gateway. If any of the items listed below are of interest, give Alan a call at 8233 5858 or ayates@smegateway.com.au There is a major panel contract for consultation services for DSTO. As with any tender it is not possible to accurately predict total expenditure, but it is estimated to be $20-$40 million, and it is expected that most expenditure will occur in SA. The closing date is January 24, 2008. The full documentation can be obtained from the following link:- https://www.tenders.gov.au/?event=public.advert.show&AdvertUUID=A7DA40AA-D773-8F72-85C0EAE82BD5486C SummaryThis is an RFT for the provision of corporate information systems and information technology services for DSTO. The closing date is Jan 24 2008. The skill disciplines identified in the panel are as follows
:• Account Management
• Business Analysis
• Data Archiving Service
• Data Backup Service
• Database Management
• Database Service
• Desktop Support Service
• High Availability Service
• Messaging and Directory Service
• Network Routing and Switching
• Network Security
• Project Management
• Server Management – Windows
• Server Management – NIX
• SharePoint and InfoPath Development Service
• Storage Area Networking (SAN) Service
• Systems Security Service
• Technical Writing
• Terminal Services
• UNIX Authentication and Directory Service
• Web and Collaboration Service
• Web and Database Solution Development Service
Individual tenders that address less than 80% of the above are unlikely to be successful, so companies that have skills in any of these areas may wish to consider working with SME Gateway, who are in the process of putting together their submission.
Feel free to call Alan Yates 8233 5858 to discuss.

For the past few years I have managed to take a week or so off over Xmas/New Year to attend the 62nd Annual Jazz Convention in Goulburn. http://www.igoulburn.com/browse.asp?cid=6029
Originally started by Graeme Bell in 1946, it has run continuously for 62 years.
The type of Jazz played is typified by “When the Saints go marchin’ in”.
The Convention starts on Boxing Day, includes events such as a Jazz parade through the main street, a picnic day and finishes with a New Year’s eve Jazz party.
Originally a get together for Jazz Musicians, these days it is attended by 200+ musicians and 700+ delegates (jazz lovers) over the 6 days.
A great way to spend a week listening to top musicians playing great music and leave the troubles of the world behind.
